Research Achievements (Salient findings of M.V.Sc , Ph. D thesis, Research Projects or Field trials).
Research finding of concluded RCM project entitled “Screening of aquatic snails for life cycle stages of Fasciola employing molecular techniques”
Students Thesis (M.V.Sc) = Nil
Students Thesis (Ph.D) = 02
Thesis title: Studies on Studies on Parasites of Equines in Kashmir valley (submitted by Shahana Riyaz Tramboo and degree completed on11/06/2020).
Out of 2008 Faecal samples collected from equines of Kashmir valley 1709 were found positive for GI helminths. The various genera of parasites identified were
Cythostomum
spp
, Triodontophorus
spp
,
other Strongyles
, Dictyocaulus
spp
, Parascaris
spp
, Oxyuris
spp
, Strongyloides
spp
and
Trichostrongylus
spp
.
Ectoparasites collected were lice (
Damalinia
spp), Ticks (
Haemaphysalis
spp), and flies (
Tabanus
spp,
Chrysomyia
spp and
Gasterophilus
spp). Examination of 200 blood smears by microscopy and PCR did not revealed presence of any haemoprotozoa. The efficacy trials for Benzimidazole drug indicated development of resistance by GI Nematodes of equines which was confirmed by allele-specific PCR.
- Thesis title: Studies on Fresh water snails and their cercarial fauna of veterinary importance in central zone of Kashmir valley (submitted by Zahoor Ahmad Wani and degree completed on 26-08-2020).
A total of 10 snail species under 5 genera recorded were
Physa acuta, Lymnaea lagotis f
.
costulata
,
L. stagnalis
,
L. brevicauda
,
L. auricularia var obliquata
,
L. luteola f. typica
,
Gyraulus ladacensis
,
G. pankogensis
,
Bithynia troscheli
and
Indoplanorbis exustus
. Prevalence of snails was found to be highest in summer (53.81%) followed by spring (29.76%), autumn (15.66%) and lowest in winter season (0.75%). Four types of cercariae recorded were gymnocephalus cercaria, furcocercous cercaria, echinostome cercaria and xiphidocercaria. Gymnocephalus cercariae were released by
L. auricularia
only; echinostome cercariae by
L. stagnalis
,
L. lagotis
,
L. brevicauda
and
G. ladacensis
; furcocercous cercariae by
L. stagnalis
,
L. lagotis
,
G. ladacensis
and xiphidocercariae were released by
L. stagnalis
,
L. luteola
,
L. lagotis
,
L. brevicauda
,
L. auricularia
,
B. troscheli
and
P. acuta
snails. None of the snails released paramphistome cercaria. The gymnocephalus released by
L. auricularia
snails were confirmed to be belonging to
Fasciola hepatica
and
F. gigantica
which proved that only
L. auricularia
is the Inetrmediate host of
Fasciola
spp. in central zone of Kashmir Valley.
