The agriculture in Jammu and Kashmir State is strongly influenced by vagaries of weather. The State, in general, and Kashmir region, in particular is at present reeling under drought spell in some pockets and mitigation strategies are called for to enable farming community harness maximum productivity from their crops. The rainfall data since January, 2009 shows deficient monthly rains during the months of March, April, May and July. The crops that sustain only on precipitation have suffered due to deficit soil moisture and heat stress particularly in the month of July, that may result in declining yields both in agricultural and horticulture crops. Unless timely and appropriate corrective measures are adopted both for standing Kharif as well as Rabi season crops, the situation may worsen further. Strategies suggested by SKUAST-K for combating drought need urgent attention by the farmers and growers to avoid further set back to their crops.
