Trainings are perpetual activity of this Directorate since its inception. It organizes different type of training courses for the officers and field functionaries of Development Departments. These are based on the of principle Learning by doing so as to make them effective in transfer of technology by updating their knowledge and skill. The main emphasis of holding such training courses was to acquaint the participants in the following areas: Agricultural technologies and allied fields Recent research innovation Assessment and refinement of technologies and farming practices; and Communications skills
During 2001-2007, 460 training programmes consisting of induction, orientation, refresher and specialized courses in agriculture, animal husbandry and allied sectors were conducted. The development department officers, NGOs and other related officers were the beneficiaries. Now these trainings are being carried out by the SKUAST-K Divisions. T&V (Training and Visits) Workshop: In mid seventies, it was felt that extension services in developing countries suffered a lot of weaknesses (Benor and Baxter, ,1984 ) So, as a means of reforming and strengthening the extension services, a reorganized system of Agricultural Extension, known as TRAINING AND VISIT ( T&V) was introduced in either explicit or implicit in about 40 developing countries. The Training and Visit system was introduced in the state of Jammu & Kashmir since 1984. Under this system all development officers particularly Subject Matter Specialists (SMSs), Sub-Divisional Extension Officers (SDEOs),Agriculture Extension Officers (AEOs) and Village Level Workers (VLWs) play important roles in dissemination of Agricultural Technology to farmers field. Among these SMSs and SDEOs roles are extra-ordinarily important as they keep linkage between the research scientists of Agricultural University at one end and with the field functionaries of the state department at the other end. The Key Features of this system are: Professionalism.Single Line of Command. Concentration of Efforts. Time Bound work. Field and Farmer Orientation Regular and Continuous Training Linkage with Research.
Transfer of Technology generated by the scientists of the University is ensured through Monthly Training and Visits (T&V) Workshops and training on special topics since (2001- Sept. 2007). Under the T&V programme, we have conducted 233 workshops, giving latest technology know-how to 3380 Development Department officers of Agriculture. Although, this was a World Bank scheme which has been abandoned in other SAUs, we have fortified it and broadened its scope in-spite of the curtailment of funds. We have been managing its useful application by our own resources, under Directorate of Extension Education. During the past years the participants reported, deliberated and discussed on the field problems like blast management in paddy, nursery management in paddy and vegetables, problems of fruit set in orchards, newly SKUAST-K released varieties of fruits, crops and vegetables, Integrated pest diseases and nutritional management systems, hybrid seed production, communication skills and new extension approaches etc. Special lectures and trainings were arranged on protected nursery management and blast management in paddy, fruit propagation methods, disease control in honey bees etc. besides the improvement in the monthly messages. In light of the introduction of the Agricultural Technology Management Agency (ATMA) in three districts of the valley, the participants at many times took part in SAMETI and SREP deliberations. In many workshops the participants brought samples and visited various divisions and experimental trials to enrich their knowledge, experience and skill about the latest agricultural technologies.
