To augment the human resource and undertake the research challenges for sustainable livestock development through technological development and conservation of animal resources, the Faculty of Veterinary Sciences & Animal Husbandry Shuhama was established in 1984 as a constituent unit of Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences and Technology (SKUAST), soon after the establishment of the University in 1982. After bifurcation of the University in 1999, the Faculty remained as an organ of SKUAST-Kashmir. The mandate of Faculty is in line with the tripolar functioning of the University viz. Teaching, Research and Extension.

Following its establishment in 1984 as a camp college at Nowshera, Srinagar, the Faculty of Veterinary Sciences and Animal Husbandry has registered a tremendous growth in its structure, infrastructural facilities and activities. The Faculty shifted to its actual campus at Shuhama in 1990. Initially established with five Divisions and two animal farms (Cattle Breeding Farm Manasbal and Sheep Breeding Farm Shuhama), the Faculty was reorganized into eighteen Divisions besides Veterinary Clinics and Animal Farms, in the year 2000. Centre for Animal Biotechnology has been added in the recent past. There has been a parallel growth in terms of supportive facilities with strengthening of Laboratory and Library facilities, and establishment of Bioinformatics Center, Central Computer Lab., Students facility center, hostels, guest houses, etc. the faculty has gained national reputation under Star College Status sponsored by Department of Biotechnology, MoST, GoI. The status of livestock farms have been raised to Livestock Research Institute with Centres for Research on Cattle, Sheep & Goat, besides establishment of centres of research on Poultry and wildlife. Faculty positions are in line with the Veterinary Council of India recommendations of minimum requirements. The intake capacity at UG level has been raised from 16 to 100 and masters and PhD programmes are now being offered in almost all disciplines. The institution has achieved national and international reputation in the area of research. Starting from the basic and strategic research, the institution is carrying research activities involving frontier sciences like cloning and omics. It has been successful in producing world’s first pashmina goat clone ‘NOORI’. The institution has established a good platform for undertaking competitive research in advanced areas and has successfully lead the national and international collaborative projects.


  • Faculty of Veterinary Sciences & Animal Husbandry SKUAST-Kashmir will strive to become a centre of excellence in teaching, research and extension education in the field of Veterinary and Animal Science in order to realize sustainable and secure livelihoods.
  • To make the state of Jammu and Kashmir not only self-sufficient but exporter of livestock and livestock products through optimum utilization of natural resources and strengthening the traditional husbandry practices on one hand and commercialization of livestock sector on the other hand; provide for animal welfare; and conservation of animal biodiversity including wildlife in order to ensure attainment and continued satisfaction.
  • Undertake region-based, need-based and basic research for improving animal health and productivity by adopting modern technology.


  • Technology orientation in livestock/poultry sector for food/nutritional security, livelihood improvement of farming communities, employability, entrepreneurship development, conservation of animal genetic resources and one-world one-health
  • To pursue and maintain a world-class leadership role in quest for knowledge by way of advancing veterinary education, improving animal health and welfare, and enhancing environmental quality.

To build a strong base for continuing education for skill up gradation of the field functionaries in the livestock and associated sectors.
